Using historical city directories and Sanborn maps, this amazing map visualizes the changing residential patterns of the Jewish community in Homestead from 1890-1945. It is the only way you can explore the streets where the community began; the neighborhood was demolished in 1941 to expand the steel mill. Click below to explore, and/or watch the video below (slides) to learn more about how we made the map and how it works.

I am more grateful than I can say to Lauren Winkler, who undertook the development work that made this amazing map possible. She produced in weeks what I had dreamt of for years. A special thanks also to Don Krieger of DonsList.net, who OCR'ed all the historical Homestead city directories and shared the text output with me directly.
